Healthy Eating Tips that Work

You already know that “eating right” is the key to better health and weight management. But learning to eat healthy can seem like an overwhelming task. In reality, making the switch to better eating is about making small changes consistently. Learn about the little things that can bring big results.

3 Easy Tips for Better Eating

  1. Be a picky eater. Think about food as the fuel your body needs to keep moving, and focus on choosing “high-octane” fuel. When you eat, make sure you’re eating the best foods available. Focus on brightly colored produce, whole grains, lean proteins, and low-fat dairy. Stay away from processed and packaged foods that give you very little bang for your bite.
  2. It’s not just what you eat, it’s how much you eat. Americans especially are constantly being served oversized portions of foods. Pay attention to the serving sizes listed on your food labels and learn about recommended serving sizes for unpackaged foods. For example, one portion of meat, fish, or poultry is just 3 ounces-about the size of a deck of cards. To help with portion control when you go out to eat, split the entree with a dining companion, or ask for a to-go container at the beginning of your meal and reserve half to take home.
  3. Just eat. Mindless munching is the end of many well-intentioned diet plans. When it’s time to eat, just eat. Don’t watch TV or work or do anything else that will distract you from what you’re eating and how much you’re eating. Snacking in front of the TV or while you’re doing another activity is a great way to end up taking in more food-and more calories-than you meant to or even realize.
